Abstract:

This paper aims to respond to and refute a common criticism against Topological Vortex Theory (TVT), which claims that the theory is unscientific due to its highly mathematical nature and lack of direct experimental verification. The article argues that this criticism is based on a narrow positivist view of science. By elucidating the plurality of scientific verification and systematically enumerating cross-scale phenomena—from quantum vortices and superconducting vortex lattices to atmospheric circulation, galactic structures, and even cosmological topological defects—the paper demonstrates that Topological Vortex Theory possesses solid explanatory power and a foundation of indirect validation. Consequently, the accusation of “lack of verification” fails to comprehend the evolving nature of scientific theories and the complexity of validation, amounting to specious reasoning. The paper ultimately advocates for a more inclusive and dynamic framework for evaluating scientific theories.

Introduction: Framing the Issue

In contemporary dialogues between philosophy of science and scientific practice, a common critique targets certain theories for being “overly mathematical” or “lacking direct experimental verification,” thereby marginalizing them as “non-scientific” or “pure mathematical games.” Topological Vortex Theory is often a representative target of such criticism. Critics argue that the theory is built upon a highly abstract mathematical framework with insufficient physical verification, thus casting doubt on its scientific status. However, this paper contends that dismissing the scientific nature of Topological Vortex Theory on the grounds of “lack of direct verification” not only overlooks the diverse forms of scientific validation but also ignores the theory’s universal explanatory power for vortex structures across scales, from the microscopic to the macroscopic. This paper will systematically argue that Topological Vortex Theory possesses a solid scientific foundation, and the claim of its “lack of verification” is, in fact, a misunderstanding of the nature of scientific validation, bordering on specious reasoning.
